Laying Down the Burden
Laying Down the Burden: A Monument for the Invisible Wounds of War.
Laying Down the Burden is a national monument honoring Veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and the families who walk beside them, created to make invisible wounds visible and to remind every Veteran that they are not alone and it is okay to lay the burden down. The monument is meant for those returning from traumatic experiences who feel isolated, for loved ones searching for ways to help, for those grieving someone lost to post traumatic stress, and for survivors who now mentor others while continuing their own healing.
Through etched granite imagery and sculptural elements, the design shows the weight many carry home, the power of Veterans supporting Veterans, and the possibility of hope, connection, and healing within the communities that still need them. It also reinforces core truths that PTS spans every conflict, that it is treatable, and that healing is strengthened through connection with those who understand, you are worthy of love and belonging, your family and community still need you, and you have a duty to stay alive. This monument is deeply needed because it creates a permanent public place of understanding and support for Veterans and families, honors those lost, and helps bridge the gap between military service and civilian life.
Supporters can help bring Laying Down the Burden to life through donations and fundraising that fund design, fabrication, and construction; whether by giving once or becoming a monthly donor.
